Our story begins in Norfolk, UK. James and Ben are friends from the same village. James builds properties, Ben builds software.

In 2023, James noticed how few people in the construction industry were following the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment professional standard. This made James wonder why. After looking into the problem, he found a few reasons for the slow adoption. James knew that some kind of software could ease these difficulties. But where to start?

James knew Ben has been building software for a long time, and has solved problems in different industries. So James told Ben what he’d learned and his plan to solve it. Ben recognised the problem immediately and liked James’ idea. The two set about planning, and discovered quickly how much there was to learn and what the obstacles were.

Undaunted, the pair researched every facet of the space; Whole Life Carbon Assessments, Operational and Embodied Carbon, Carbon Accounting, Greenhouse Gas, RICS, BREEAM, LEED, EPDs.

All of this helped them formulate a plan. They interviewed people who were already suffering the problems of costly and time-consuming Whole Life Carbon Assessments. They spoke to key industry leaders and investors to find what metrics mattered to them.

They set about building the software to track embodied and operational carbon. From design to construction, though use and eventual re-use.
